Have you been watching The Blue Planet ? If you have you will know what a wonderful, beautiful planet we all live on. You will also know that our planet is in trouble. And it isn't just from climate change.
Climate change IS happening, the evidence is clear, even if the President of the United States prefers to ignore it. But there are also other major problems that human beings have directly contributed to - over producing leading to waste; pollution; and the dreaded plastic.
In fact what was hailed as the miracle cure for our insatiable desire to cut down trees has in fact become a nightmare. Plastic is essentially indestructible and difficult to get rid of. Yes, plastic can be recycled - up to a point - but its use for decades is now becoming a major problem not only for wildlife but for us. Many of the products we consume - particularly cosmetics are loaded with small beads of plastic - microbeads.
Yes, governments around the world are waking up to this, but their attempts to eradicate the problem are often slow and even resistant.
So, where does that leave you and I?
Well, this is very easy actually. If governments won't do anything about the problem, you and I can quite easily by switching to alternative eco products which are pollutant free or at the very least are less harmful to the environment. There is only one problem - where do you get them from?
Traditional shops and supermarkets while they say are interested in helping the environment, in reality if their bottom line is affected this interest is just lip-service. In any event, even if they do have eco alternatives available trying to work out which are which from the myriad of other traditional products isn't that easy. Many of these newer products are manufactured by small, independent businesses which (like many farmers trying to sell their milk) would eventually be driven out of business simply because they can't produce the mass quantities supermarkets want and at low enough cost.
But there is a good news story. While these small businesses are doing well via their own online and other offline marketing, they will often need help.
That's where a newish business called Wikaniko has stepped in. Wikaniko is a cooperative marketing business. The latter itself is very environmentally unfriendly.
